LIDL is to hold autism friendly shopping evenings in its Newry Damolly and Newtownards branches.

The quiet shopping hours will be held from 6-8pm every Tuesday in October as part of a trial.

The supermarket chain says lighing will be dimmed, there will be no music or in-store announcements and priority will be given at tills to individuals and families dealing with autism.

Extra assistance will also be available to those who request it while a map will be displayed to help children with autism plan their visit to the shop.

Staff at the two branches have undergone autism awareness training with the help of National Autistic Society Northern Ireland.

Deirdre Ryan, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility for Lidl Northern Ireland, said the trial will determine how the supermarket introduces autism friendly shopping in other locations.
