Marie Louise McConville: Time to celebrate - Primark is back

I imagine it's what winning the lottery feels like.

Everything new and shiny.

Jackets, handbags, shoes galore, covered in sequins, of course.

The smell of hot chocolate and waffles in the air and a manicure whenever I feel like it.

People, you can all call your therapists and cancel the sessions because Primark in Belfast has finally reopened - and what an experience it is.

In August 2018, our hearts broke into pieces when Bank Buildings went up in flames.

For the past four years we have had to walk past those big, ugly yellow containers and basically mourn the loss of the best shop in Belfast city centre.

Last week, when I was asked by the newsdesk if I could cover the press opening of the shop this week, I have to tell you, I was ecstatic.

So, on Tuesday, the Irish News A-Team, made up of Hugh Russell and myself, made our way to Bank Buildings - my spiritual home - for a special preview event before the store opened to the public.

I'll be honest and tell you, once inside, I ditched Hugh and made a beeline for the `trend' section where sequins and sparkles filled the walls.

After running amok amidst the glitter, I felt I needed a pick-me-up so I made my way to the Disney café where I fell in love with the gorgeous Mickey-inspired cupcakes and freshly-made waffles, the aroma of which filled the entire second floor.

I then checked out the beauty salon and toyed with the idea of treating myself to a full set of party lashes, just because I was in the mood for celebrating, but then I felt a sudden pang of sadness.

As a former employee of Primark, I spent some wonderful days in Bank Buildings working amongst some of the nicest people I have ever met.

I know it's a bit of a cliché, but it was like we were one big family and I loved worked in ladies wear - despite all the folding and refolding and folding and refolding.

On Tuesday, it felt like that era had truly gone, up in smoke if you will, replaced by total newness.

I had a walk among the wall of stunning handbags and surveyed the column of colourful bath bombs and even tried on a jumper or 10 but none of it made me feel better.

So, it was back to the Disney café for some hot chocolate and a brownie.

As I left the store four or five hours later, I found myself smiling as I walked out the main doors.

There's no point mourning the past and besides, I'll always have the memories of our stock room antics and Christmas dinner debacles.

After four long years, Primark has risen from the ashes amid a fanfare of fun and I for one am over the moon.

So, only one last thing to say - "Meet you outside Primark?"

Competition

With the dark nights taking hold, how about winning "a taut and terrifying new novel full of suspicion and revenge".

Unravelling Alice by NA Cooper has been described as a book with "so many good twists and turns".

When Alice starts a conversation with an attractive stranger, the last thing she expects is to be kidnapped.

Completely taken by surprise, the handsome stranger pulls a knife on her and drives her away in his car.

Then she hears a sound coming from the boot.

The abductor has a connection to her past and soon she finds herself face-to-face with her former fiancé,

imprisoned in an isolated warehouse.

The truth about last year’s events is about to be revealed - and it’s not going to be what anyone expected.

I have three copies of Unravelling Alice to give away.
