IN THE world of fashion, there are celebrities who divide opinion (a certain family of reality TV stars, for example), then there are the famous faces who are universally admired for their personal style.

Sarah Jessica Parker is one such individual, so you know that when the Sex And The City style icon decrees that cardigans are cool again, you better believe it's true.

The 54-year-old was recently spotted at a film screening in a slouchy brown cashmere cardigan from knitwear brand Madeleine Thompson.

Plus, the button-down knit has found another 90s TV star champion of late, in the form of Katie Holmes.

When the former Dawson's Creek actor was papped wearing a matching cashmere cardigan and bra while hailing a cab in New York the photo went viral and fashion fans clamoured to find out where the items were from.

The twinset is by American brand Khaite, which has also been worn by the likes of pop star Selena Gomez and model Kaia Gerber.

So you want to join the cardi crew? There are a few rules you'll need to follow.

First of all, this trend is all about effortless cool, so your cardigan needs to be oversized and made from a chunky wool - forget any notions of prissy, tight, buttoned-up-to-the-neck styles paired with pearls.

It's got to be boxy and short with a V-neck, rather than longline and snug.

Keep it subdued on the colour front, too. Think biscuit, oatmeal, ivory or soft peach - cool tones that are ideal for teaming with faded denim jeans.

As for what to wear it with, you could take your cue from Parker and Holmes and opt for a matching knitted bra or crop top, or wear it with nothing underneath, as you would a jumper.

Alternatively, layer your cardigan over an mannish white shirt for a relaxed but cosy winter look.
