You’d be hard pushed to find a better match for a seafood platter than a breezy, bone-dry Muscadet (from the Loire Valley), with its zingy freshness and light, lemony character. Flavours of crisp lemon, apple and melon are well balanced with a good minerally edge and fresh acidity. A must with moules mariniere and crusty French bread to dip in the white wine sauce, you can almost sense the sea spray hitting the deck.

Cote de Charme Sauvignon Blanc, Alsace, France (£9, M&S)

The temperate climate and rich terroirs help to produce a wonderful diversity of wines and this example draws draws out the best qualities of this distinctive grape variety. Enjoy while it is fresh and youthful, as a chilled aperitif or to elevate fresh seafood and white fish.

WINE OF THE WEEK

Fruit Orchestra Chenin Blanc Viognier 2018, South Africa (£8, The Co-operative, in store only)

A fine and fruity blend, citrus and florals meld with apple and tropical fruit, and there’s a burst of juicy freshness that gives this wine depth as well as crispness. A splash of Viognier lends some complexity with light blossomy aromas. It’s smooth and broad, with good weight, as well as being full-favoured and rounded with lots of personality.
