A further five Covid-linked deaths have been confirmed in Northern Ireland and 1,252 new positive cases.

It brings the total number of cases during the pandemic to 32,286, including almost 7,000 in the last seven days.

The Belfast council area recorded the most new infections yesterday with 321, followed by Mid Ulster with 149 and Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon where there were 132.

There were 296 patients with Covid-19 being treated in hospital last night, with 34 in intensive care and 25 on ventilation.

Meanwhile, latest figures from the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency recorded 27 deaths in the week October 10-16 - quadrupling from seven the previous week.

While the Department of Health's daily statistics focus primarily on hospital deaths, and only include people who have tested positive for the virus, Nisra's figures are drawn from death certificates in which Covid-19 is recorded as a factor, regardless of where the death took place or whether the person had a test.

They put the total number of deaths in Northern Ireland during the pandemic at 942 last Friday.

Of those, 55 per cent took place in hospital, 38 per cent were in care homes, 6 per cent were in residential addresses and other locations and 0.8 per cent in hospices.

The majority occurred in Belfast - 264 - followed by 107 in Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon and 94 in Antrim and Newtownabbey.

People aged 75 and over account for 79 per cent of all Covid-19 related deaths.

The 365 deaths which occurred in care homes and hospices involved 86 separate establishments.

Up until October 16 the deaths of a total of 441 care home residents were linked to coronavirus, 84 of which occurred in hospital.

This means care home residents make up almost 47 per cent of all deaths linked to Covid-19 in Northern Ireland.

Meanwhile, in the Republic, there were 777 new cases recorded yesterday and a further seven deaths.

It brings the total number of cases since the outbreak began to 55,261, while there have been 1,878 Covid-related deaths.

There are currently 319 patients in hospitals, while the number of people in intensive care remains at 37.
