A further five people have died from coronavirus in Northern Ireland, bringing the death toll to 78.

The Public Health Agency said today that another 84 new cases of Covid-19 had been detected.

The number of confirmed cases in the north now stands at 1,339.

A total of 9,564 people have been tested for the virus.

The figures were released as the doctor overseeing Northern Ireland's new Nightingale hospital for coronavirus patients urged the public to heed advice to stay at home, warning that survival rates for anyone ending up in intensive care is "50/50".

Dr Paul Glover also said he expects some frontline staff will experience "pscyological trauma" in the weeks ahead, during which time "difficult decisions" around treatment will be made which are normally reserved for war-time situations.

Based at the Belfast City Hospital, the tower block has been transformed to accommodate 230 critical care beds while highly skilled medics and nursing staff have been deployed from across the north's health system in preparation for a surge in intensive care admissions.

At Stormont's daily briefing last night, Mr Swann said the north was "only at the start of the potential peak that we've been looking at from our worst-case scenario".

"Complacency can be our biggest enemy at this minute in time because if people don't see the direct effect it is having today, they may think their actions aren't playing a part. They do, because your actions today will affect where our health service is in two weeks' time," he said.

"You will see, especially coming into the Easter holidays, an increased presence of the Police Service of Northern Ireland on our roads actually making sure that anybody who is taking a journey outside the home is doing so because of essential purposes."
