The six-week-old baby is believed to be world's youngest victim.

"Testing confirmed last night that the newborn was COVID-19 positive. This is absolutely heartbreaking. We believe this is one of the youngest lives lost anywhere due to complications relating to COVID-19," Mr Lamont tweeted. 

On Wednesday he had revealed: "A 6-week-old newborn from the Hartford area was brought unresponsive to a hospital late last week and could not be revived." 

The coronavirus-linked death toll in the US has nearly doubled in three days to 5,137, with 216,722 confirmed cases. It is the worst hit country in the world.

New York state is the epicentre of the outbreak in America, accounting for more than a third of US deaths.

In Europe, it is thought that a 12-year-old girl in Belgium is the youngest to have died after catching coronavirus.
