In the High Flyers spotlight this week is James Wright, new development director at Alpha Housing

What was your first job?

During my school summer holidays I worked on my aunt and uncle’s farm, doing an array of jobs from helping at the farm shop and feeding animals to harvesting hops. That's probably one of the reasons I ended up at agricultural college.

What qualifications do you have?

I have a degree in rural estate management, and I am MRICS (Chartered Member of Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors)

What do you attribute your success to?

I'm honest and straightforward, and I have a real drive to provide homes and to get deals done. My career progression to date has been down to creating good working relationships and willingness to take responsibility

How would you describe yourself to someone who’d never met you?

The big fella with the funny accent!

Who do you look up to in business?

I look up to people who are able to get things done, even when there are seemingly countless obstacles in their way – and who maintain a sense of humour.

How do you get the best out of people who work for you?

I try to get the best out of people who work for me by enabling them to take on new responsibilities, just as people have for me during my career. I also make sure that they know I support them and have their back.

If you could change one thing about doing business in Northern Ireland, what would it be?

In my role this would have to be the planning system, the out-of-date area plans and a system that is clogged with single house applications blighting our beautiful countryside.

What website or app could you not do without?

Google Maps and the Planning Portal. I look at sites across Northern Ireland and these are the essential tools for desktop research (and avoiding getting lost when out on the road!).

What was the last book you read?

The last book I really enjoyed was 'Where the Crawdads Sing' by Delia Owens.

What car do you drive?

Hyundai Ioniq 5 – fully electric. Yes, I have become a miles per KwH bore!

Tell us something interesting about yourself?

Years ago, I delivered a Land Rover from Tralee in Co Kerry to a farming cooperative in Nakuru, Kenya, via Cape Town. An unforgettable trip.

What’s your greatest passion outside work and family?

Sport – as an ageing enthusiast I have moved on to the sidelines and on to the golf course, but still try to run about when the chance arises.
