INDEPENDENT timber importer, builders' and plumbers' merchant Haldane Group has reported £179 million of sales in 2021 - up by more than a third on the previous year's figure of £132.3 million.

The group, which employs more than 700 staff, supplies the construction industry, trades and the general public from a network of 21 branches across Northern Ireland, England and the Isle of Man.

Brands include Haldane Fisher, GE Robinson, Plumbmaster, Key Hardware and Wigan-based specialist timber importer Prowood which the company acquired last year. The group also includes Bathline, a one-stop resource for bathroom design and expertise.

The accounts recorded profits before tax of £19.65m, compared to £7.2m in 2020, when the business was disrupted by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and government lockdown orders.

Group managing director Ian Haldane said: "Demand across the entire construction sector was high throughout 2021 as it recovered from the lockdowns of the previous 12 months.

"The financial performance is a credit to colleagues across our expanding branch network, who work tirelessly to uphold the high quality of service and continuity of supply that we are renowned for.

"It was particularly pleasing to complete the acquisition of Prowood in October and we are encouraged by the opportunities this is already bringing, allowing us to extend the range of exceptional products we offer our customer base.

"As we approach the final quarter of 2022, we also prepare to face a number of headwinds that will impact the building sector as a whole including rising energy bills and inflationary pressures."

Family-owned since its foundation in 1946, Haldane Group sells more than 13,000 building products across 800 categories, including landscaping, timber, building materials, and doors.
