Plans are filed for new Lidl store in Coleraine

LIDL has submitted plans to relocate and rebuild its Coleraine store.

The retailer, which has more than 41 stores in Northern Ireland, says the new site will open later next year at the Riverside regional centre retail and leisure complex.

Its launch will create 18 jobs, adding to the existing 22 roles already in place at the current site in Coleraine.

Lidl said the application is part of a major transformation of its retail estate across the region.

Around 200 construction jobs will also be needed during the build.

Riverside is the main retail park in Coleraine and is home to stores including B&Q, Dunelm and Currys.

The new Lidl store earmarked for the site will be in keeping with the retailer's new Concept design and sustainability standards and will feature a larger 1,670 sq m of sales space and wider aisles within a site expanding to more than 2,400 sq. m.

Enhanced parking, electric charging points and new landscaping will also be included.

The relocation and new opening is not the first investment the retailer has made in the area.

It has opened new stores in Ballymoney and Limavady in recent years and is currently live with a new store in Strabane.

It also opened a store at Buncrana Road in Derry last year.

Lidl Northern Ireland regional property director Chris Speers said: “We look forward to continuing to work with Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council and all stakeholders across the area to realising our ambition for additional investment and new jobs in Coleraine.”

Last month, Lidl Northern Ireland opened a new, enlarged Concept design store at Shore Road in north Belfast.

The retailer is the fastest growing supermarket in the north and aims to increase its store number to 50 here.

It contributes £180m a year to the local economy, sustaining 3,500 jobs while buying and exporting as much as

£290m worth of local goods and products.

The company also employs more than 1,000 employees across its store network and regional distribution Centre at Nutts Corner
