High Flyers: Kyle wants to see more people coming through in technology

In the High Flyers spotlight this week is Kyle Taylor, technical services manager at Telefónica Tech UK&I

What was your first job?

In my early teens I worked in an ice cream shop at a park during the summer holidays. I also delivered newspapers at the weekend which I was terrible at. I’m not a morning person!

What qualifications do you have?

I left education early after doing standard grades. I have professional qualifications in ITIL and BCS change management.

What do you attribute your success to?

I think it’s a mix of work ethic, being grounded, and the people I have had round me. Success cannot be achieved alone. For the last 10 years I have been in the very fortunate position to work with, build and lead exceptional team. This has led to great achievements on a personal and team level.

How would you describe yourself to someone who’d never met you?

Approachable, honest, hard working and committed. I have no volume control. So if you’ve never met me but have been in the same postcode, you’ve likely heard me.

Who do you look up to in business?

I’ve been fortunate to work for several great leaders who have influenced me along the way. The leadership in a business has always been a key deciding factor for me when it comes to where I want to work. The leadership team at Telefónica Tech UK&I are great. They are approachable, supportive and really care about their people.

How do you get the best out of people who work for you?

It’s a cliché but it’s fundamental - treat others how you would like to be treated. Respect, trust and honesty are core to my approach and in my experience you will get the same in return.

If you could change one thing about doing business in Northern Ireland, what would it be?

Northern Ireland, in particular Belfast, is a fast-growing tech hub which is fantastic for the local economy and the industry. However, the fast rate of growth has led to a shortage of talent to fill roles across the sector. We need to see more people coming through.

What website or app could you not do without?

WhatsApp. It’s a quick and easy way to communicate with friends and family.

What was the last book you read?

Alan Turing: The Enigma. A fantastic read

What car do you drive?

Chevrolet Orlando. It’s a running joke that I have an affinity for buying complete disasters and my current car is no exception.

Tell us something interesting about yourself?

Before starting my career in IT, I worked in radio and deejayed in bars and clubs.

What’s your greatest passion outside work and family?

Football (following my beloved Ross County) and DIY. Not sure which is worse, Ross County’s form or my DIY!
