MASCOTT Construction (Europe) has been chose by the new owners of Custom House in Belfast to undertake a major refurbishment and fit-out scheme at the iconic building.

Straidorn Properties, the property investment arm of businessman Neil McKibbin and his family, are investing £7.5 million to refurbish the 58,000 sq ft space into stylish office accommodation.

Work will begin this month and should be completed by next June, with the project offering jobs for up to 100 people throughout its construction phase.

Straidorn has developed a scheme with architectural practice Todd which sympathetically links and enhances the industrial origins, splendour and historical features of the existing building to modern office users.

“We're absolutely delighted with our appointment for this prestigious project, which demonstrates a commitment and support to the local construction industry by Straidorn," Mascott managing director Jonathan Payne said.

Neil McKibbin, director at Straidorn Properties, added: “Custom House is of huge historic and strategic importance to the city and for our business, and our investment demonstrates our confidence both in Belfast’s office market and in the city itself.”

All four floors of the Grade B+ listed Custom House building will be included in the current refurbishment project.

The scheme will deliver a new co-working space on the ground floor, a vaulted communal room, private phone booths and meeting pods, lounges, a private dining area, showers and changing rooms, and a range of different sized offices.

Based at Heron Road in Belfast, over the last 30 years Mascott has built up a significant portfolio of successfully delivered projects in various sectors including commercial and retail, office, residential, infrastructure, health and education.

It currently operates extensively throughout Northern Ireland but is expanding its business operations further into the England and Republic of Ireland markets.
