THE site of a former garage and car showroom in the centre of Newry is to be redeveloped into a new apartment scheme.

Co Down building contractor Kelly Brothers has secured planning approval for the four-storey project, estimated to be worth around £3 million.

It will see the existing buildings at the junction of Merchants Quay and Canal Street removed, to be replaced by 35 apartments and three ground floor retail units.

The new development has been designed as a single building fronting onto Merchants Quay and turning the corner onto Canal Street.

The proposal, submitted just 12 months ago, was officially approved by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council last week.
