DISTRIBUTION network operator SGN Natural Gas has appointed David Butler as its new director to lead the huge energy infrastructure project bringing natural gas to the western area of Northern Ireland.

He takes up the role following the departure of Danny O’Malley, who has moved to a new position in SGN as group head of transmission based in Scotland.

Prior to joining SGN he accumulated almost 20 years’ experience in various senior roles at Phoenix Natural Gas, and he has a track record of designing and building gas networks.

As head of engineering with SGN since 2015, he led the main construction phase of one of the most significant infrastructural projects ever undertaken in the north, with the potential to meet the energy needs of up to 40,000 homes and businesses in Tyrone, Fermanagh and Derry over the next 40 years.

The father-of-two is a native of Nenagh in Co Tipperary, but his studies took him to Belfast in the 1990s where he gained a bachelor of engineering and master of science (engineering computation) from Queen’s University.
