TWO Premier League football stars have invested at least £1 million each into growing Newry-based technology firm STATSports.

England internationals Raheem Sterling and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have been announced as outside investors and global ambassadors for the sports analytics company, whose extensive client list includes leading teams in football, rugby, basketball and GAA.

They are two of the "multiple" elite athletes, who have invested seven figure sums in the wearable performance tracking and analysis firm, which is now valued at £200m.

Manchester City player Sterling believes STATSports can become a "billion dollar plus" company.

“I use STATSports technology every single day for both City and England and have done for years, so I know how valuable it is for getting the best out of me for the team," he said.

"STATSports has already made a big name for itself in the elite game but it’s clear to me that there is huge potential for the technology and that is why I’ve invested."

Chamberlain, who plays for Liverpool believes the company has the potential to be the "Instagram or WhatsApp of wearables".

“Knowing the guys at STATSports, I am super excited for where this will go, the sky is the limit," he said.

“I have chosen STATSports above all potential investments. It’s a brand and product I have known and trusted for the last 10 years of my footballing career. Working with STATSports at Southampton, Arsenal, Liverpool and with England I know this is the best product on the market by far."

Jarlath Quinn, executive and chief global strategist at STATSports described the investment as a "landmark moment" for the company.

"The fact our first set of investors include top players such as Alex and Raheem, who know better than anyone the importance of our technology, is a ringing endorsement of our plans to cement our position in the B2B (business-to-business) market whilst growing the huge B2C (business-to-consumer) opportunity.”

“The company has been profitable year on year without taking any investment since inception in 2009. What is even more remarkable is for a technology company to achieve global market leader status whilst being bootstrapped," he added.

STATSports works with some of the biggest sporting teams in the world, including the likes of Manchester United, Juventus and Paris Saint Germain. Away from football they also provide the technology to international rugby teams such as Ireland, England and South Africa and work extensively with US teams in the NFL and NBA.

Last year the Newry firm struck landmark agreements with US Soccer, the Chinese Football Association and the Brazilian Football Confederation for its APEX device.
