A BALLYCASTLE café was among the big winners at the prestigious World Bread Awards.

Thyme & Co, owned by husband and wife team Tom and Eimear Mullin, triumphed in the Irish Wheaten Loaf category, beating off competition from bakers across Ireland and the UK.

The firm's ‘Ballycastle wheaten’ wowed an extensive repertoire of judges, including awards host and Dickenson & Morris Master Baker Stephen Hallam.

Thyme & Co's wheaten bread is based on a recipe given to Eimear Mullin over ten years ago by Ballycastle woman Roberta McBride. Since then, it has been refined by bakers in the café to create the winning product.

"We always knew it was good bread. We would have people calling in specifically to get it. It's a hidden gem and we are delighted to see it recognised like this," Eimear said.
