AN ENGINEER Imagines is a new documentary on the life and work of Irish structural engineer Peter Rice, one of the most distinguished and innovative engineers of the late 20th century.

Educated at Queen's University Belfast, Dublin-born Rice worked on some of the world's most recognisable buildings including Sydney Opera House, the Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Lloyd’s Building in London. He was awarded the Royal Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects shortly before his death in 1992.

Directed by Bafta Award-winning Irish cinematographer and director Marcus Robinson (Rebuilding The World Trade Center), An Engineer Imagines will be showing at Queen’s Film Theatre Belfast from March 8 until March 15.

Utilising Robinson’s trademark 35mm time-lapse photography, the film captures Rice’s inspiring creations while shedding light on the man behind the work via conversations with family and collaborators and through his own writings.

"Filming and directing this homage to one of the world’s greatest structural engineers has been a moving and life-affirming experience," explains Robinson.

"It is as though at every step of the way, we have been guided by the transcendent spirit of Peter Rice, brought to life by the loving words of those who knew him best and by the extraordinary buildings that bear his innovative touch."
