FILM critic, Ford Capri owner and all-round good dude Mark Kermode has been a long-time supporter of Cinemagic Belfast – so it should come as little surprise that he'll be presenting one of his Film Night events at this year's festival.
The Good Doctor (as this PhD-ed up movie nut is often referred to) will be commandeering a screen at QFT Belfast for the express purpose of introducing and discussing one of his 2017 favourites, The Red Turtle.
As if you didn't already know, The Red Turtle was the first international co-production from renowned Japanese animation giant Studio Ghibli.
Animated by Michael Dudok de Wit, who co-wrote the film with French film-maker Pascale Ferran, it's a near worldless tale of the unlikely friendship formed between a shipwrecked castaway and a giant sea turtle.
"Eloquent, profound and moving, it left me with a heart full of bittersweet joy, a head dizzy with dreamy visions and cheeks wet from tears that rolled like waves on a distant beach," enthused Kermode in his Observer review.
"It is a work of art which transcends boundaries of language, culture, geography and age. It is simply magnificent."
This auspicious event will take place on Saturday October 28, during which Dr Kermode will also be holding forth on the year's other film releases – the great, the good and the really, really bad – with the help of Brian Henry Martin before throwing himself open to questions from assembled devotees.
