Sharon Shannon, Thursday October 15, The Empire, Belfast

SHARON Shannon returns to Belfast next month for a gig at The Empire.

The Co Clare accordionist, who recently released a new live album and concert film In Galway, has enjoyed several number one albums, singles and DVDs here in Ireland.

Her eponymous 1991 LP is one of the biggest selling albums of Irish traditional music ever released, while 2000's Galway Girl went quadruple platinum.

Shannon's version of the latter's Steve Earle-penned title-inspiring track, The Galway Girl, won the Meteor award for 'most downloaded song' two years in a row and in 2009 she also became the youngest ever recipient of the Meteor Lifetime Achievement Award.

Renowned for her genre-hopping collaborations in trad, hip-hop, Cajun, country, classical and rap, over the years the accordion-wielding multi-instrumentalist has recorded and toured with some of the best known names in music, including Bono, Adam Clayton, Sinead O’Connor, Jackson Browne, John Prine, Steve Earle, The Waterboys, The Chieftains, Willie Nelson, Nigel Kennedy, Alison Krauss and Shane MacGowan.

In 2014 Shannon performed with reggae legend Dawn Penn as part of The Lee Thompson Ska Orchestra on the single Bangarang.
