Man killed and two injured in Co Derry farm incident

A man in his 70s has died and two other men have been injured in what police have described as a “farm incident” in Co Derry.

The incident happened on Thursday morning in the Cullyrammer Road area of Garvagh and emergency services remained at the scene in the afternoon.

A PSNI spokesperson said police attended the scene following the “sudden death of a man aged in his 70s”.

“Two other men, also injured during the farm incident on Thursday morning, 16th May, were taken to hospital,” the spokesperson said.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious at this time. Officers will provide assistance to the Health and Safety Executive’s investigation.”

A Health and Safety Executive NI spokesperson confirmed it “is aware of in an incident in the Garvagh area and is in attendance”.

The NI Ambulance Service sent three emergency crews to the area alongside the Charity Air Ambulance.

“Following initial assessment and treatment at the scene, one patient was taken to Causeway Hospital by Ambulance. One patient was taken to Royal Victoria Hospital by Air Ambulance,” a spokesperson said.

DUP councillor for the Bann area, Michelle Knight-McQuillan, told the Irish News: “As news of this is travelling out of the area, people are in utter shock.



“It’s a very busy time for farmers, and such tragedies hit deep in farming communities - this is the sort of place where everyone knows everyone and this is really devastating for Garvagh.

“Everyone will now be pulling together to try and do what they can for the families of those involved in this incident.”

UUP councillor Richard Holmes, who lives in Garvagh, said: “This is a very close-knit rural community and this tragedy will impact a lot of people. My thoughts and the thoughts of the whole community are with the family of the deceased and with those who have been injured.”
