Sperrin Mountains

In the North East of the County the Sperrin Mountains are much more weathered and rounded than County Down's rugged peaks, but are equally attractive to walkers. Good places to start walking tours of the Sperrins are the two visitor's centres and Gortin village.

The Sperrin Heritage Centre on the Glenelly Road in Cranagh near Cookstown has displays on the history and ecology of the area. You can also have a go at panning for Sperrin gold which has been discovered in small quantities.

An Creagan Visitors' Centre (01662 761 112 £2) in Creggan near Cookstown has been built to look like the many cairns in the vicinity. It has interpretative displays about the raised bog area, information on rambling and cycling routes, bikes for rent and hosts occasional cultural events.

Farmland and woodland covers the valleys and lower slopes of the Sperrins while blanket bog and heather moors lie on the upper reaches. The unspoilt terrain is home to lots of wildlife including kestrels, hen harriers, badgers, stoats and Irish hares.

The highest peak in the 64km long range is Mount Sawel (683m) behind the Sperrin Heritage Centre. You can also ride through the Sperrins on tours from the Edergole Riding Centre in Cookstown
