Tipperary
Tipperary has some of Ireland's richest farmland and much of the
County is characterised by wide open spaces of lush green pastureland.
The Galtee Mountains in the south of the County are the location
of the scenic Glen of Aherlow which is popular with walkers, cyclists
and anglers and the Mitchelstown Cave which has beautiful limestone
formations.
The Rock of Cashel, which towers over the town of Cashel and the
flat plain around it was a major centre of power in the midlands
and is the site of possibly Ireland's most impressive religious
ruin.
Tipperary also has other interesting ruined churches at the Holy
Cross Abbey and at Holy Island on Lough Derg and some well preserved
High Crosses in their original settings in Ahenny and Kilkieran
and a number of castles and Norman tower houses including Cahir
and Ballynahow. Tipperary's most lively towns are Clonmel, Cahir
and Cashel.
