Roscommon
Roscommon has a number of grand houses built by Anglo Irish landlords
who were granted large estates of land by the English Crown. Strokestown
Park House is one of the most interesting to visit because of
the intentional juxtaposition of tours of the big house with a
museum on the causes of the Great Famine. However, reminders of
the former Irish ruling families of the county also remain.
Ballintober Castle was the stronghold of the O'Conor family who
could trace their ancestors back to the Kings of Connaught.
The ruin of the Cistercian abbey, Boyle Abbey with its Gothic
carvings is also worth a visit.
There is coarse fishing on the River's Shannon and Suck, which
run through the County and on Lough Ree on the border with Longford.
