Offaly
The highlight of County Offaly is Clonmacnoise monastic site,
which was one of the most important in Ireland during the Dark
Ages and is still well preserved. The scenic Slieve Bloom Mountains
sit on the border with County Laois, and Offaly also has some
interesting areas of raised bog. The longest river in Ireland,
the Shannon runs along much of Offaly's border with Galway and
canoes and cruisers can be hired from Banagher and Tullamore.
Offaly's most lively town, Birr, has been made a heritage town
because of its Georgian architecture, mall and traditional shop
fronts.
