Meath
The huge prehistoric tomb of Newgrange is one of Irelands most
famous and significant archaeological sites. The Hill of Tara,
which was the seat of the High Kings of Ireland also has major
historic significance and features in many Celtic legends and
in the story of Saint Patrick's mission to convert the Irish to
Christianity.
The Hill of Slane is also linked to Saint Patrick. Irelands most
famous illuminated manuscript, the century Book of Kells was either
brought to Ireland to Kells Monastery or written there in the
7th century. County Meath also has remains of many more modern
castles and houses which also have interesting histories attached
to them.
King Henry of Lancaster is said to have been imprisoned in the
walls of Trim Castle before becoming King Henry IV of England
and the author and later bishop of Saint Patrick's in Dublin,
Jonathan Swift lived in Talbot Castle for a time after being sold
the former abbey by his mistress.
