Kilkenny
Kilkenny was the base of the Anglo-Norman Earls of Ormonde, (the
Butlers) one of Irelands most powerful ruling families in Ireland
between the 14th and 17th centuries. The Ormondes built up their
massive castle in the medieval city of Kilkenny on the River Nore
and were the driving force behind the 1641 Confederation of Kilkenny
parliament.
Although Kilkenny City was sacked by Cromwell many of its small
medieval streets remain and although it has not retained its city
status, Kilkenny is one of the most attractive, cosmopolitan and
lively towns in the south of Ireland. County Kilkenny has a great
number of religious and castle ruins dating from the 12th century
including the impressive Jerpoint and Kells Abbeys, which have
some of the finest examples of Norman influenced medieval carving
in Ireland.
County Kilkenny also has attractive farming countryside and the
scenic River Nore and River Barrow Valleys are popular with walkers
and cyclists.
