Kerry
County Kerry is one of the most visited counties in Ireland and
some of its attractions including the Lakes of Killarney and the
Ring of Kerry are world famous. Killarney National Park contains
beautiful mountainous and lakeside scenery and is easily accessible
from the busy tourist centre of Killarney Town.
A plethora of tour operators run bus trips around the Ring of
Kerry, which has some pretty coastal scenery on the Iveragh Peninsula,
however, some of Kerry's most beautiful scenery and ancient ruins
have remained relatively untouched by tourism.
The Dingle Peninsula has some impressive promontory forts, the
largest concentration of the tiny ancient beehive huts which were
built by Kerry's first farmers and Christian monks around the
8th century and the most perfect of Ireland's distinctive upturned
boat shaped oratory churches, the Gallarus Oratory. The peninsula
has some of the most spectacular scenery in Ireland including
the drive around Slea Head and the mountain drive over the Connor
Pass. Regular boats trips leave from the bustling fishing port
of Dingle town to see Kerry's resident wild bottlenose dolphin,
Fungi, who has become a legend in his own time.
Many of Kerry's seaside towns offer activities like scuba diving,
fishing trips, hill walking and rock climbing and in good weather
boats run out to the Blasket Islands and to Skellig Michael which
has a fascinating monastery site. As Ireland's most southerly
county, Kerry has a reputation for warmer weather than the north
of the island and has some nice beaches, however, it also has
indoor attractions including aquariums in Dingle town and Fenit,
the Aquadome watercentre in Tralee, stately homes and heritage
centres.
