The county of Fermanagh is world famous for the vast array of scenery itpossesses including its beautiful waterways and historical statues.
Much of Fermanagh is covered by Lough Erne, a lake in which its Upper and Lower sections join at the settlement we today call Enniskillen.
Enniskillen, the county capital, boasts a number of tourist attractions, namely, Cole's Monument, the Ardowen Theatre, Enniskillen Castle and Portora Royal School, which has been attended by famous Irish writers such as Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett.
In November 1987 the town hit the headlines when at a Remembrance Day service an IRA bomb exploded, killing 11 innocent civilians.
There are many other attractions in Fermanagh. Belleek Pottery is a prime
example of this as in recent decades this business has prospered onto a world-wide market. With the recent mergers of Galway Crystal and Donegal China, further development and publicity for the company and the county seems certain.
Fermanagh attracts many visitors each year with its cruising, watersports and particularly its fishing. Both Lough Erne and Lough Melvin attract fishermen from all corners of Ireland and other foreign fishermen are seen
during the summer months spending hours on the peaceful, idyllic lakes.
As with any other rural county, the farming industry is widespread in Fermanagh, but the main source of income for the county is through its tourism exploits.
The continued development of facilities in Fermanagh suggests that tourism will continue to be a priority in the future.
