Hill, bikes for rent, the Aillwee Caves are near Ballyvaughan.
Newtown Castle and Gleninagh Castle near Ballvaughan were both
16th century castles of the O'Lochlain family. Nearby Gleninagh
Castle has a holy well and a ruined medieval church outside.
Carrigaholt - dolphin watching trips on the Shannon Estuary, pubs
Carron - The Burren Perfumery (Tel: 065 89102) sells scents made from
Burren flowers, Cahercommuan Cliff Fort
Corofin - Clare Heritage and Genealogical Centre (Tel: 065 37955) has
an ancestry tracing archive and exhibits on the Great Famine's
impact on County Clare, Dromore Wood Park and ruins and O'Brien
castle, nearby Dysert O'Dea monastic site and nearby Leamanegh
Castle
Doolin - town famous for its music pubs, access to the Burren accommodation,
campsite, eateries, Doolin pitch and putt mini golf, ferries to
the Aran Islands, bikes for rent, caving and potholing, (the Poll
an Eidhnain cave has a 6 metre long stalactite), Ballinalackan
Castle, Green Holes of Doolin sea caves, nearby, 15th century

Doonbeg - safe beaches on the Atlantic coast, ruined Doonbeg castle, accommodation,
eateries, music pubs
Ennis - Clare's main county town, narrow medieval streets, ruined Ennis
friary founded by Cairbeach O'Brien, Earl of Thomond in the 13th
century (Tel: 065 29100. Entry IR£1), small museum dedicated to
the post Irish Civil War President of Ireland Eamon de Valera
who was MP for Clare on Harmoney Row (Tel: 065 216126. Entry free),
accommodation, traditional music pubs, shopping, eateries, monument
to Daniel O'Connell who successfully led the political fight for
Catholic Emancipation, (Ennis tourist office Tel: 065 28366).
Ennistymon - trout and salmon fishing on the River Inagh, Cascades scenic
walk along the river, accommodation, pubs, eateries
Fanore - tiny village with a safe sandy beach backed by dunes, walks
up the Khyber Pass in the Caher River Valley and into the Burren
and to the caves Poll Dubh and Poll Mor and to an ancient ring
fort, accommodation,
Kilfenora - ruined 12th century Kilfenora Cathedral and high crosses, Ballykinvarga
stone fort
Kilkee - touristy seaside town with a long sheltered beach with sea
caves, natural swimming pools, scuba diving at the Duggerna shore
dive site and the Black Rocks open water dive site (Tel: Kilkee
Diving and Watersports Centre 065 56707), accommodation, campsite,
eateries, pubs, bicycles hire for riding the Loop Head Scenic

Killaloe - Saint Flannan's Cathedral which has Saint Flannan's oratory
church outside, 9th century Saint Lua's oratory, Killaloe Heritage
Centre with displays on local history, camping and caravan park,
accommodation, eateries, (Tourist Office Tel: 061 376866), nearby
Killaloe Beal Boru archaeological site
Killimer - Fortfield Open Farm with lama, red deer and pot bellied pigs
Killinaboy - 14th century church with a rare sheila na gig carving of a
female fertility god
Kilrush - huge Kilrush Creek marina, boats to Scattery Island monastic
site, Scattery Island Centre, accommodation
Lahinch - toursty seaside resort with amusement arcades, accommodation,
and a good beach with surfing waves, Lahinch Seaworld Leisure
Centre (Lahinch tourist office Tel the Leisure Centre on 065 81900),
pony trekking from the Willie Daly riding centre 065 71385
Liscannor - start of scenic route to Hags head and the Cliffs of Moher,
Clahane Beach, ruined castle. Saint Brigid's Holy Well is still
a pilgrimage site for people looking for cures.
Lisdoonvarna - old spa town and base for exploring the Burren, Spa Wells Centre
traditional watering spa (Tel 065 74023), Burren Smokehouse Visitor
Centre with exhibitions about smoking salmon, accommodation, eateries,
pubs
Miltown Malbay - The survivors of the Spanish Armada ship the San Esteban were
executed by the Irish chief Turlough O'Brien who was loyal to
the English, on the Hill of the Gallows at Spanish Point near
Miltown Malbay in 1588. Spanish Point beach is now popular for
surfing. Willie Clancey Summer School and festival in July, nearby
Diarmuid and Grainne's Bed ancient gallery grave
Mountshannon - boat trips to Holy Island monastic settlement, accommodation,
pubs (Tourist office Tel: 061 927300). Near Mountshannon the Shannonside
Activity Centre (Tel: 061 376622) offers sailing, windsurfing,
canoeing, pony trekking, hill walking and cycling. The Mountshannon
Pony Centre (061 921428) offers pony trekking. Centre for fishing
on Lough Derg, boast for hire, camping and caravan site, accommodation,
eateries, pubs
