Wexford
On Ireland's East Coast, Wexford was founded by the Vikings who
invaded in the 9th century. The invasion by the Normans, who first
landed at Bannow Bay on the Hook Peninsula at the invitation of
the King of Leinster Dermot MacMurough in 1169 continued Wexford's
particularly bloody history which carried on into the 17th and
18th centuries during Cromwell's tour of Ireland and the 1798
United Irishmen Rising.
The Irish National History Park delves even deeper into Irish
history and has reconstructions of Irish settlements and monuments
from Mesolithic campsites to crannogs. The County also has some
well preserved castle and abbey ruins including Enniscorthy Castle,
Ferns Castle, Tintern Abbey and Dunbrody Abbey.
Rosslare is one of Ireland's busiest ferry ports with connections
to England and France. The coastline also has many scenic areas
especially along the Hook Peninsula and some fine long sandy beaches.
There are several good birdwatching places in Wexford including
Curracloe Nature Reserve and Wexford Wildfowl Reserve and the
Saltee Islands.
