Ireland wing Andrew Trimble may yet play a part in this year's Rugby World Cup after being forced off in the 34rd minute of Ireland's World Cup warm-up victory against Wales on Saturday.

It was Trimble's first Ireland start in more than a year due to a toe injury sustained in October, and a recurrence of that injury against Wales sparked fears that he will miss the World Cup.

An initial scan was inconclusive but boss Joe Schmidt has revealed a second scan had a more positive prognosis for Ireland's Player of the Year in 2014.

Schmidt said: “The second scan was relatively positive. There’s some bruising in the foot and down around the toes. He’s going to start with some light running during next week and we’d hope that he’d be fully fit to be selected for Wales [on August 29], starting training Monday week."
