RONAN Toal saw off Eugene McVeigh clashed in this year’s U18 ulster final held over the Tullysaran course on Sunday.

Toal, son of legendary 10-time senior champion Michael, started favourite after his impressive win in the semi-final. McVeigh is certainly an up-and-coming talent who narrowly lost out in the All-Ireland final last year in Cork and a very worthy finalist.

In a fascinating encounter it took a terrific last shot from Toal to seal his first Ulster Title. Toal led by a bowl of odds at the Hall but unforced errors from here allowed McVeigh to pick up the lead before the final corner. Both throwers showed great skill round the bend to set up a grandstand finish and when McVeigh failed to reach the church. Toal made no mistake . He took the title and will contest in the All-Ireland final in two weeks’ time.

Meanwhile, Madden’s Geraldine Kiernan held her nerve at the finish to win the girls’ U18 title in a competitive final against Tierna McVeigh.

Elsewhere, two-time Ulster champion Cathal McGuire came up short against Madden clubmate Niall Stevenson in the boys’ U14 Ulster final also held over the Tullysaran Road on Sunday.
