Wimbledon finalist Venus Williams has been fined 7,500 US dollars (£5,800) for skipping a mandatory media interview.

The America tennis star did not attend her interview with ESPN, the US host broadcaster, after her quarter-final victory over Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko on Tuesday.

She also only spoke to host broadcaster BBC on Thursday, two days after her match.

But five-time champion Williams has already won £1.1 million in prize money for making it to the ladies' singles final on Saturday, and is in line for a £2.2 million pay cheque if she wins.

The 2017 Grand Slam rulebook says: "Unless injured and physically unable to appear, a player or team must attend the post-match media conference(s) organised immediately or within 30 minutes after the conclusion of each match.

"All media obligations include, but are not limited to, interviews with the host and player's national broadcaster."

Fines of up to 20,000 US dollars (£15,400) can be given to players who break the rules on media conferences.

Jamie Murray's mixed doubles partner, Martina Hingis, was also fined this week.

The Swiss player was handed a 3,000 US dollar (£2,300) fine on Wednesday for unsportsmanlike conduct.
