1873: The Scottish Football Association was formed when representatives from eight clubs met at the Dewar's Hotel in Glasgow.
1948: The Lincolnshire Handicap drew a field of 58 horses - the largest number of runners for a flat race in Britain.
1967: Former West Indies cricket captain Sir Frank Worrell, who scored 3,860 runs in 51 Test appearances, died at the age of 42.
1991: Ronnie O'Sullivan, at the English Amateur Snooker Championship, became the youngest player to compile a maximum 147 break at the age of 15 years and 98 days.
2002: Everton terminated the contract of manager Walter Smith.
2003: Best Mate, ridden by Jim Culloty, became the first horse since L'Escargot in 1970 and 1971 to win consecutive Cheltenham Gold Cups.
1967: Colombian defender Andres Escobar was born. Escobar was murdered in 1994 after his own goal contributed to Colombia's first-round elimination from the World Cup.
2006: Former Celtic forward Jimmy Johnstone died aged 61.
2010: Jessica Ennis won gold in the pentathlon at the World Indoor Championships in Doha.
2013: Heavy favourite Sprinter Sacre, trained by Nicky Henderson and ridden by Barry Geraghty, won the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
2016: Ross County won the Scottish League Cup for the first time in their history after beating Hibernian 2-1 in the final at Hampden Park.
2016: England won the RBS 6 Nations title after Scotland beat France 29-18 at Murrayfield. The Red Rose went on to claim the Grand Slam for the first time since 2003.
