On This Day - Feb 6 1962: Derry GAA legend Tony Scullion is born

1895: Baseball great George Herman 'Babe' Ruth was born. The New York Yankees hero began his career as a pitcher but went on to become his sport's greatest hitter. He helped establish the Yankees as one of the top teams of the 1920s and 30s. He scored 2,174 runs and hit 714 home runs. Ruth died in 1948.

1924: Former England football captain Billy Wright was born. The Wolves great became the first man to win 100 England caps and captained his country a then-record 90 times. He died in 1994.

1958: A plane carrying Manchester United players crashed at Munich airport as the team travelled back from a match against Red Star Belgrade. A total of 23 people died as a result of the accident, including eight United players.

2001: Hull City were locked out of their Boothferry Park ground after bailiffs, under landlord David Lloyd's orders, changed the locks.

2002: New Zealander Graham Henry stood down as coach of the Wales rugby union team.

2004: Former England boss Sir Clive Woodward was named as the British and Irish Lions head coach for their 2005 tour of New Zealand.

2007: Liverpool announced to the Stock Exchange they had agreed the terms "of a recommended cash offer" to be made by the American consortium led by George Gillett and Tom Hicks to buy the club.

2008: Goals from Shaun Wright-Phillips and Jermaine Jenas ensured Fabio Capello's reign as England manager got off to a successful start with a 2-1 win over Switzerland at Wembley.

2016: England launched the Eddie Jones era by emerging from a tricky RBS 6 Nations opener against Scotland at Murrayfield with a 15-9 victory.

BIRTHDAYS

Tony Scullion (gaelic games): former dual football and hurling star with Derry in the 1980s and 1990s. He was part of Derry's 1993 All-Ireland Championship winning side, also winning Ulster Senior Football Championships in 1987 and 1993. With Derry footballers he usually played in the full-back line and is regarded as one of the best full-backs of his generation, born 1962

Ricky Barnes (golf) - American who was runner-up at the 2009 US Open, born 1981.

Sreesanth (cricket) - former India bowler who was banned for spot-fixing in 2013, born 1983.

Darren Bent (soccer) - Derby's former England striker, born 1984.

Brendan Taylor (cricket) - Nottinghamshire batsman and former Zimbabwe captain, born 1986.

Craig Cathcart (soccer) - Watford and Northern Ireland defender, born 1989.
