1967: A crowd of 62,000 at the Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, witnessed the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10 to win the first Super Bowl.

1984: Ukrainian pole-vaulter Sergei Bubka set his first world record with a vault of 5.81 metres.

1999: Terry Venables ended his management spell at Crystal Palace after only eight months in charge. Steve Coppell took over from Venables, who agreed to become a part-time consultant for the club.

2006: The News of the World newspaper published details of its undercover 'sting' on Sven-Goran Eriksson, in which the England coach told 'fake sheikh' Mazher Mahmood he would resign if his team won the World Cup and would be interested in managing Aston Villa as part of a hypothetical takeover.

2007: South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs was banned for two Test matches following remarks made against Pakistan.

2008: Chelsea agreed terms with Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow for Serbia defender Branislav Ivanovic.

2010: The Football Association fined West Ham £115,000 following crowd trouble in a game with Millwall earlier in the season.

2012: Paul McGinley was appointed Europe's captain for the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, taking over from Jose Maria Olazabal.

2014: Chelsea signed Nemanja Matic for £20.75million from Benfica, while Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese submitted his resignation from the club.
