Denn shock Ulster camogie champions Clontibret

Ulster Junior B Club Championship Final: Denn (Cavan) 3-15 Clontibret (Monaghan) 5-3

CAVAN side Denn surprised defending Ulster Junior B camogie champions Clontibret in the Ulster final in Inniskeen this week – despite conceding four goals in the opening half.

The Cavan side finished strongly and outscored the Monaghan champions by 1-5 to 0-1 in the last quarter with the Fitzsimmons sisters, Aisling Collins, Emer Tierney and Deirdre Reilly really impressive while Clontibret’s Aisling McElvaney, Jennifer Duffy, Émer McGlone and Nicola Morgan and 15-year-old goalie Ellanna Fitzpatrick caught the eye.

Although Shanise Fitzsimons opened the scoring with a point for Denn, a goal from Emer McGlone was quickly followed by 1-1 from Jennifer Duffy and Clontibret led by 2-1 to 0-2.

Hannah Fitzsimons hit back with 1-1 at the end of the first quarter and her sister Shanise added two points to put Denn in the lead. But that was to change before the break with both McGlone and Duffy each hitting the net for a second time.

The teams turned around with Clontibret 4-1 to 1-6 ahead, but Deirdre Reilly’s goal in the 34th minute changed things and four points from the Fitzsimons sisters edged Denn ahead again at 2-10 to 4-2 at the end of the third quarter.

Then came another twist with Emer McGlone completing her hat-trick in the 47th minute. However the excellent Shanise Fitzsimons hit back with a Denn goal three minutes later and her side pushed on five points, shared by the three Fitzsimons sisters with only a Marie Grennan free in response.

Denn now go forward to play the Munster champions in the All-Ireland semi-finals on November 10th.
