Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Intermediate Camogie Championship

Section 1

Westmeath 1-14 Galway 3-9

Kildare 1-6 Cork 1-22

Dublin 2-4 Kilkenny 2-17

Kilkenny and Galway moved to the top of the table in Group 1 of the Intermediate championship with away wins at the weekend.

Kilkenny had a comfortable 13 points to spare in Dublin, but Galway were lucky to come away from Kinnegad with a single point victory over Westmeath, Antrim’s next opponents.

Antrim didn’t have a game at the weekend but need to win in Westmeath to keep any hope of a semi-final spot alive following a defeat to Galway in the first round.

Section 2

Wexford 1-10 Tipperary 2-15

Down 0-16 Laois 1-8

Down and Tipperary moved clear in Group 2 of the Liberty Insurance All Ireland Intermediate championship following Saturday’s win over Laois at Ballyholland.

The home side had a strong breeze on their backs for the first half and Karen McMullan cut through from midfield for an early point, quickly followed by scores from Sorcha McCartan and Sara Louis Carr.

But Sarah Anne Fitzgerald pulled two points back for the visitors before Down knuckled down to the challenge and scored seven unanswered points. During that period Laois had a couple of goal efforts and Catherine McGourty pulled off two good saves from Fitzgerald.

The Down defence was in great form while Karen McMullan, for the second week running turned in a Player of the Match performance.

Just before the break Kirsten Keenan pointed twice for Laois who trailed by 0-11 to 0-4 at the turnover.

By the three quarter mark Laois had narrowed the gap to just two points (1-8 to 0-13) with a goal from distance from Clodagh Tynan. However Down, now with McMullan operating as sweeper and half-time substitute Dearbhla Magee making an impact, again steadied the ship and did all the scoring in the last quarter with a monster free from Fionnuala Carr followed by a Niamh Mallon free and a neat point from Magee.

Tipperary were comfortable 2-15 to 1-10 winners over Wexford and will play Laois in a fort-night’s time in Round 3, while Down will host a Carlow side that was hammered by Derry at the weekend.

Referee: Philip McDonald (Cavan)

Carlow 0-8 Derry 4-18

CARLOW felt the back-lash from Derry’s first round defeat to Laois in Swatragh when the teams met on Saturday in Feenagh.

The Oak Leaf cailíní were all fired up from the start and finished the opening half with a 1-10 to 0-3 lead, the goal coming from midfielder Gráinne McNicholl’s penalty while Gráinne McGoldrick (4) and Áine McAllister (3) accounted for most of the points.

Derry pressed on after the break with the McNicholl sister scoring goals each and sub Therese Mellon adding a fourth.

While Derry controlled the game from start to finish, Gráinne McNicholl, Dervla O’Kane and Áine McAllister were the key players, while an injury to Gráinne McGoldrick before the break was the only down side to a good team performance.

Derry’s next game is away to bottom of the table Wexford on July 6th before they have a make or break home game with Down a fortnight later.

Derry: Gráinne McNicholl 2-2, Mairead McNicholl 1-1, Aine McAllister 0-7, Gráinne McGoldrick 0-4, 0-3 frees, Shauna Quinn 0-2, Mary Hegarty 0-1.

Carlow: Eleanor Treacy 0-4 frees, Ciara Quirke 0-2, Rachel Sawyer 0-1, Emma Coogan 0-1.

LEAGUE champions Galway bounced back from defeat to Kilkenny last week and won Saturday’s Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Championship tie on a 3-15 to 0-6 against Offaly.

Galway led by 0-7 to 0-1 at the interval but killed the game on the restart with goals from Ailish O’Reilly and Catherine Finnerty with Finnerty grabbing another goal near the end.

Kilkenny were even more emphatic winners in Bellfield against Wexford running up 7-28 to the home side’s 0-6. Katie Power helped herself to a hat-trick of goals, while Miriam Walsh had two and there was one each for Anne Dalton and substitute Michelle Quilty.

In Group 2, Niamh Rockett played a captain’s role with 1-2 in Waterford’s 1-11 to 1-5 triumph over Dublin at Walsh Park. Beth Carton supplied eight points while Kerrie Finnegan goaled for Dublin.

Elsewhere in this group, All-Ireland champions Cork came good in the second half to see off a Tipperary 2-20 to 1-8 in CIT after the sides were level, 0-10 to 1-7, at the break.

Megan Ryan scored a brilliant solo goal for Tipperary, but a series of Cork points at the start of the second half pulled them clear and Chloe Sigerson goaled from a late penalty to make the victory more emphatic.

Meanwhile Clare secured their first victory of the campaign with a 0-12 to 0-11 win in Páirc Táilteann after they had led by 0-7 to 0-4 at the break. Jane Dolan hit three late points to level for Meath but Mairéad Scanlon and Chloe Morey replied for Clare who hung on for victory despite an injury time point from Megan Thynne.
