Irish News Past Papers - Oct 25 1998: Kevin Grieve’s goal seals Mageean Cup final victory

Mageean Cup final St Mary’s, Belfast 1-7 St Patrick’s Maghera 1-5

THIS Bank of Ireland Ulster Colleges’ Senior Hurling final was decided a minute from time when Ciaran Herron’s 65 was blocked down to Kevin Grieve who shot to the net from five yards.

It was the only chance Grieve got, but he took it in style and it completed a remarkable comeback by St Mary’s who collected their fourth successive Mageean Cup.

However, Maghera will wonder just how they let it slip.

Vincent Kennedy’s goal in the third minute of the second half gave then a six-point lead.

But they had only a pointed free from Martin Kidd to show for the final 27 minutes.

The scoreline of 0-2 to 0-1 to St Patrick’s at the break would suggest it was a far from entertaining first half. Nothing could be further from the truth with both sets of players showing piles of commitment and no little skill.

Maghera opened the second half in whirlwind fashion. Kidd pointed from 40 yards, Adrian Quigg shot a great point from the same spot a minute later and in the third minute a long clearance fell kindly for Vincent Kennedy to pull to the corner of the net.

Then just when it seemed Maghera might hold on, Grieve pounced for a valuable score to keep the cup on the Glen Road.

They knew it was going to be difficult against an Eglish side which needed a win to secure Division One A status for next season.
