DAVY FITZGERALD’S days as Clare manager could be numbered amid reports he is set to step down later this week.

The former Banner netminder guided his native county to their first All-Ireland in 18 years when they fended off Cork after two classic ties in 2013. But they’ve failed to hit those heights in the three seasons since, failing to win a Munster Championship match or reach an All-Ireland semi-final.

The Clare People reported earlier this week the Clare players were set to meet to discuss next year, which it’s understood they did on Monday night. Fitzgerald underwent heart surgery days before Clare’s All-Ireland quarter-final defeat by Galway earlier this year and has been under increasing pressure over the last two winters amid their failure to push on from that 2013 success.

Former Cork goalkeeper Donal Óg Cusack was introduced as a coach and selector this season and he would appear the obvious front-runner to replace Fitzgerald, if he goes.
