A MISSED penalty in the dying seconds contributed to the drama as Westmeath stunned Kilkenny in the quarter-finals of the Leinster U21 Hurling Championship on Wednesday night.

Westmeath led the Cats by 1-11 to 0-11 going into injury-time in Cusack Park, but the hurling aristocrats refused to throw in the towel, scoring a point and then winning a penalty as the clock ticked down. But Eddie Brennan’s men couldn’t pull off a great escape, missing from the spot as the midlanders made the provincial semi-finals.

In the two other quarter-finals played last night, Carlow beat Laois on a scoreline of 1-17 to 1-15, while Offaly hammered Kildare by 5-22 to 1-12. Dublin will play Wexford in the final last-eight pairing next Wednesday.
