Armagh hang on to take Division 2B win over Wicklow

Allianz HL Division 2B

Wicklow 2-15 Armagh 2-16

IN a quite incredible game in Aughrim, Wicklow almost snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with two late goals

from Christy Moorehouse on 67 and John Henderson on 73.

At half-time Armagh led 2-9 to 0-6 and after the break, with the game entering the closing minutes, were still well in command leading as they were by 2-16 to 0-14.

They just held out following the concession of those majors to keep alive their hopes of making the Divisional final.

Meath 2-35 Donegal 0-9

IT’S another fight for survival for Donegal following this hammering at St Loman's Park, Trim, yesterday.

Adel McDermott's men are now firmly rooted at the bottom of the table along with pointless Wicklow, but with a much inferior score difference than the Garden County.

After coming out of the relegation scrap last year to maintain their status they face another massive fight to avoid Division 3A.

Corner forward Sean McVeigh pointed them ahead but it was all Meath after Adam Gannon found the net on four minutes.

The visitors lost midfielder Stephen Gillespie to injury after just 19 minutes but were completely outplayed as Meath picked off scores at ease throughout the opening half.

The Royals were still smarting from the shock defeat to Mayo in their last outing and seemed intent on making a statement in this one as they built up a 1-19 to 0-4 lead by half-time.

Steven Clynch, who had been plagued by injury for the best part of 18 months returned to the starting line-up for Meath, in one of four changes from the team that started against Mayo.

Clynch accounted for half of his tally of 12 points in that opening period while Adam Gannon added three points to his early goal.

Sean McVeigh shot three fine points for Donegal, all from play, in the opening quarter, and their only other point of the half came courtesy of a Lee Henderson free.

The onslaught continued throughout the second half, though credit Donegal for never giving up the fight.

They were denied a goal when Meath 'keeper Shane McGann made a terrific save to deny Sam Doherty at the expense of a ’65, which was converted by Lee Henderson on 50 minutes.

Substitute Luke Martyn was on the field less than a minute when he accounted for Meath’s second goal on 62 minutes.

Kilmacud Crokes club man Tom Clarke was also in excellent shooting form in the winners attack and finished with six points.

Henderson top-scored for Donegal with five points and they face an uphill battle in their two remaining fixtures, at home to Down this Sunday, and away to Wicklow in two weeks time.
