Fitzgibbon Cup Group D: UUJ v GMIT (today, Carnmore Hurling Club, 2pm )

UUJ hurlers have one more chance to make the Fitzgibbon Cup quarter-finals when they travel to GMIT for their second and final game in Group D.

Only three teams are in Group – UUJ, GMIT and Cork IT.

Last week, Ollie Bellew’s men lost 1-18 to 1-14 to Cork IT but can breath new life into reaching the last eight if they can take the spoils at Carnmore Hurling Club this afternoon.

Tipp star John O’Dwyer hit eight points in their four-point win at UUJ but was later sent off for the Cork students. The visitors led by 1-16 to 0-12 after 50 minutes before

James Connolly bagged a major for UUJ to make the remaining seven minutes uncomfortable for Cork IT.

Bellew’s men put an excellent show last week but if they can display the same endeavour this afternoon they have every chance of progressing in the competition.

Jordanstown will be hoping Michael Dudley, Stephen McAfee, Daniel McKernan and Jackson McGreevy produce the same kind of form that pushed Cork IT all the way.

McAfee of Ballycastle bagged a couple of fine scores against Cork while Daniel McKernan got on the scoresheet too.

Both Dudley and McKernan have shown great form for PJ O’Mullan’s Antrim side in the early throes of the season and will be key players this afternoon.
