THE new manager of the Galway senior hurlers is Clarinbridge man Micheál Donoghue, who was ratified at a county board meeting on Tuesday night.

Donoghue, who managed Clarinbridge to the All-Ireland club title in 2011, replaces Anthony Cunningham, who resigned last month following player unrest. O’Donoghue's job will be to end a senior All-Ireland famine in Galway that stretches back to their last Liam McCarthy success in 1988. The Tribes men have lost finals in 1990, '93, 2001, '05,  '12 and again this year.

It is believed that Cuala manager Mattie Kenny and Roscommon manager Justin Campbell were also interviewed for the post.

A Galway statement read: “Clarinbridge’s Micheál Donoghue is to be the new Galway senior hurling manager for 2016.

“Micheál was involved with former Tipperary manager Eamon O’Shea’s backroom team for the past two years, guided his club Clarinbridge to win the All-Ireland Club Hurling title in March 2011 and was part of this year's Clarinbridge minor backroom team that won the county title.”
