Rory McIlroy said he "can't wait" to become a US resident next year.

The 28-year-old, who married American Erica Stoll on the grounds of Ashford Castle last month, is not currently a full-time resident in the States.  This means he can spend only 120 days in America.

Now that he’s married to a US citizen he can establish a permanent residence beginning on January 1.

Speaking ahead of The Players in Florida, McIlroy said:  “I can’t wait to have a home. I’ve been a bit of a nomad for the past few years. So from January 1 next year I am going to be a legal resident of the United States and legally have a home, so I am excited for that.”

He added: “I’m in a great place in my life and I feel very settled and very lucky to be in this position. Now it’s just about trying to make the most of the good fortune that I’ve had.”

McIlroy showed off his wedding ring at the press conference and said the wedding had been an awesome experience.

"It was awesome, it was the best weekend of my life and hopefully of Erica's aswell," he said.

"It was a weekend of celebrations. We had a welcome reception on the Friday, the whole wedding day on the Saturday and a farewell brunch on Sunday. We spent three really nice days days with the people we cherish the most and that was really special."

Fans of the Holywood golf star were left disappointed after the sportsman's Irish castle nuptials were kept private and out of sight.

Despite the much-talked-about wedding taking place in the high-profile Ashford Castle in Co Mayo, no glimpse was caught of he or Erica Stoll, a former executive with the US PGA Tour.

An intense security operation meant the venue was put on total lock-down and it was impossible for any uninvited guests to gain entry.

Many guests were flown into the venue on board helicopters while others were chauffeur-driven in vehicles with blacked-out windows.

It was also reported that special measures were taken to prevent drones equipped with cameras flying over the sprawling 350-acre estate.

Among the 200 guests were a host of famous faces, thought to include One Direction star, Niall Horan, actor, Jimmy Nesbitt, Irish businessman, JP McManus, Fifty Shades star, Jamie Dornan and his wife, Amelia Warner, and martial arts star, Conor McGregor.

The world of sport was also well represented by Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Paul McGinley and Masters champion, Sergio Garcia.

McIlroy's childhood friend Harry Diamond is believed to have been the golf star's best man.

The £200,000 wedding was said to include a £50,000 fireworks display.
