Donegal can take Sam Maguire back to the Hills for the first time since 2012.

That is the firm belief of former star defender Eamon McGee as he looks forward to a potentially historic season for the county.

"It is entirely our own hands.

"We have the talent to go ahead and win an All-Ireland title and I have no doubt about that.

"But to do so we must get the very best out of the players we have", he said

And Donegal should not be overly concerned about replicating the way Tyrone went on to take Sam after beating Donegal en route.

"We have our own way of doing things", said McGee.

But McGee is equally convinced that star man Michael Murphy will be back in action and fully fit for next year.

He added that Odhran MacNiallais's recent departure from the squad would be a miss and believes that even in his 36th year, his younger brother and 3 time All Star Neil still has something to offer.

"That is just how it is and I thought Odhran would have stayed about and gave it a good go but unfortunately, he is concentrating on other things, but he will be a loss and there is no doubt about that, but we will just have to get on with it.

"He is very gifted, and we all know what he can bring to a team but there is no point in forcing him.

"And if he does not want to be there, he does not want to be there".

But one man who definitely wants to be there is Eamon's young brother Neil McGee.

"He is some buck," says Eamon with affection.

"Neil will be 36 but while I have not got any definitive answer, but the signs are pointing to him going back.

"And whether he plays a minute of the year or the whole year, he still has an important role and I think the rest of the lads have massive respect for him and he sets good standards.

"So, having someone about like that there that has experienced the big days and can offer that experience is good for the county.

"And Neil is the type of boy would not be still about if he thought he could not contribute anymore and that is his nature".

When asked if there was a sense of "unfinished business" over the way Donegal lost to eventual All-Ireland champions Tyrone last summer, he said:

"I was not chatting anyone within the squad, so you don't really know but for us looking from the outside, if Michael Murphy's penalty goes in you don't see any way back for Tyrone and then he gets sent off and Neil was taken off injured earlier in the match.

"We have a hoodoo over them and if that penalty goes in, I just don't see any way back for them and then they go on to win the game and to win an All-Ireland.

"It is maybe something we can look at as Donegal GAA men to always, always back yourself to go the whole way.

"Tyrone seemed to be in transition, but they just backed themselves the whole year and they went all the way.

"I was a bit surprised they won the All-Ireland and it was a bit crazy to be honest, but Fergal Logan and Brian Dooher did a great job and you got to respect them.

"People give out about Tyrone, but you just have to respect them for what they did and the way they went about it".

Is that an example to Donegal?

"Donegal are Donegal, and we should not saying, let's do this because other counties are doing it.

"We have our own way of doing things and I would not be crazy about going down the route of looking at other counties and how they won All-Irelands".

"We know we have the talent there, so it is just about getting our house in order".

So, can Donegal win the All-Ireland in 2022?

"I have no doubt as we definitely have a team to win the All-Ireland.

"And it is just about getting the right mix between the defensive and offensive side of our game".

When asked if Donegal need a few more defenders, he replied:

"There is that out there but if you really analyse the games and look at where the scores against us are coming from, are we lacking and what are we lacking from a defensive point of view.

"Is it big men or men in the half back-line that can mark, and we need to look at that for 2022".

But McGee has no such concerns about the attack.

"We have a great forward line and when you have Michael Murphy, Michael Langan, Paddy McBrearty and Jamie Brennan, these are players that would walk on to any team in the country so when you have players like that you can really get at teams and then you need to just shut them out at the other end".

And he has no concerns, but that Michael Murphy will be fully fit and raring to go in 2022.

"I have no doubt about it but that he will be back and fully fit.

"He will do whatever he has to do to make sure the body is right.

"That is 100 per cent and he will be another year wiser, and it is all about game knowledge and that grows as the years go on.

"Michael is still a massive part of Donegal, and we are so used to his excellence that we don't really appreciate what he brings to the Donegal dressing room and what he brings to the playing field and everything really".
