Donegal secretary Aideen Gillen tackles big issues at Convention

HER own suspension from the Association, the scourge of drugs and the potential problems of a 'No Deal Brexit' are three of the notable themes tackled by outgoing Donegal county secretary Aideen Gillen in her comprehensive report to delegates tonight in Jackson’s Hotel, Ballybofey.

Ms Gillen has spoken of the “distress” caused to her and her family after she was suspended for eight weeks by Croke Park earlier this year.

The suspension arose after the county secretary signed a letter “in good faith” supporting a reduction in the suspension of a GAA member to the Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC).

Elsewhere, while acknowledging that it was a great year for the county, the secretary warns about the “scourge of drugs” which is spreading rapidly.

“The challenges facing the young of our country today are far greater than in the past,'' she states.

“The scourge of drugs has spread out from the cities to practically all parts of the country.

“I do believe that an Association as widespread as CLG can play a part in educating our young to the danger that is poised by alcohol and drug addiction and the lasting affects this can have on people’s lives.

“Clubs are now coaching players at Under 8 level and I believe even at this early age we should use the expertise of our County Health and Well Being Committee to educate all our members on the dangers that exist with drugs and drink.''

And the secretary warns about the potentially severe impact that a 'No Deal Brexit' could have on the GAA: “Should we be faced with a 'No Deal Brexit' or the return of a hard border, we will risk having a shock to our economy which will seriously affect cross-border trade and to our collective prosperity.

“We in Donegal along with the other border counties want a continuation of free movement for our communities, clubs and people and for the rest of the people of our island.''

Ms Gillen added that she wished to acknowledge the support on the passing of her husband Martin recently.
