NEWRY Shamrocks advanced to the final of the Down Intermediate Football Championship after a pulsating victory over Darragh Cross.

Scores were at an absolute premium in the first-half, with the teams going into the break with four points each.

However, Darragh Cross grabbed the initiative early in the second half with Michael Monan netting an early goal.

Darragh Cross went on to open up a five-point lead but a Cathal Gorman goal for the Shamrocks helped cut this lead to a single point.

Anton McGrattan then struck over his seventh point of the day to give Darragh Cross a 1-11 to 1-9 lead with less than four minutes of regulation time remaining.

But that score was Darragh Cross’ last of the game and they had no answer for the onslaught that was about to hit them.

Points from Jack Haughey and Niall Cunningham seen the Shamrocks draw level just as regulation time had run out.

In additional time, Haughey scored two huge frees which seen Newry Shamrocks win 1-13 to 1-11.
