Back in the day - Ballinderry to tackle Lavey as Dungiven exit - The Irish News, Aug 16 1999

Derry SFC quarter-finals: Ballinderry 2-8 Dungiven 1-8

GOALS from Gerard Cassidy and Conleth Gilligan proved decisive for Ballinderry in this keenly-contested game at Dean McGlinchey Park.

The goals came in the eighth and 10th minutes of the second half and put the winners 2-7 to 0-7 ahead.

Twice Dungiven had led by two points in the opening half; four times also the sides were level as Dungiven went in at half time 0-7 to 0-6 ahead.

A minute after Ballinderry’s double strike, Dungiven’s Geoffrey McGonigle hit back with a well-taken goal to narrow the gap to three points.

In the final 20 minutes each side scored just a point, Conlon denying McGonigle a goal with a point-blank save in the last minute.

Magherafelt 0-10 Loup 0-13

Rossas had the advantage of a slight breeze in the opening first-half and always had an edge but a crucial sending off totally turned the contest in Loup’s favour with them eventually running out 0-13 to 0-10 winners.

Barry Gillis at wing forward and Seamus Quinn at centre back were very impressive for Magherafelt.

Higgins (2) and Gillis (2) were on target as Magherafelt built a 0-7 to 0-4 interval lead.

At the mid point of the second half Gillis and Higgins had extended Rossa's lead to 0-10 to 0-4, but they had had their influential centre half forward Seamus Quinn dismissed in the eighth minute of the half and that proved a significant blow.

From the 20th minute onwards Loup took complete control and scored seven unanswered points for a deserved victory.

Lavey 0-16 Glenullin 1-8

Glenullin trailed 0-8 to 0-7 at half-time and were still only a point behind when Rory Boylan converted his fourth free five minutes into the second half.

That however proved their last score in a low key game until sub Dominic McIlvar goaled in added time to put a better look on the score.

Lavey took complete control in the second half, Johnnie McGurk chalking up six points and Seamus Downey scoring three lovely points from play to finish 0-16 to 1-8 winners. The semi-final pairings are Bellaghy (holders) v Loup and Ballinderry v Lavey.
