How Dublin players rated against Mayo

Stephen Cluxton: Dealt well with some dangerous dropping balls but caught out by Keegan’s clever finish for the Mayo goal. 7

David Byrne: Troubled early on by James Carr’s movement but settled to task and pushed up as game wore on. Appeared to exaggerate contact after being knocked over by Cillian O’Connor. 7

Jonny Cooper: Selected instead of Cian O’Sullivan and had bother at first with Cillian O’Connor but only allowed him one point from play. Soon sweeping, cruised through until being subbed late on. 7

Michael Fitzsimons: Up against Diarmuid O’Connor initially, then Carr for a time, losing the latter for his point. Blocked a McDonagh shot and was strong against Moran late in game. 6.5

Jack McCaffrey: Very much second best to Paddy Durcan in first half and even when he escaped him was tackled by Harrison. Kept working but little came off for him. 5

James McCarthy: One of the few Dubs on form before the break, strong in possession and getting forward well. Battled for possession against Diarmuid O’Connor and pushed up on Stephen Coen at times. 7

John Small: First foul after a minute, booked at end of opening quarter, then got Ruane booked, before kicking a bad wide. Somehow stayed on for an hour. 5

Brian Fenton: Below par in first period, capped by a seemingly harsh booking – but lorded it in second half. Took marks to set up scores, netted a goal and added a point tipped over. 7.5

Michael Darragh Macauley: A lively opening, running with purpose, but perhaps fortunate to stay on for two-thirds of the match. Twice appeared to push Diarmuid O’Connor in the face – but was only booked once. 7

Niall Scully: Operated very deep in the opening half, often on the left side of defence. Shot one wide but then notched a point. His overall workrate was integral to Dublin’s comfortable win, besting both Vaughan and Higgins. 7

Con O’Callaghan: Seemed set to be another notch on Lee Keegan’s war-hammer but the Cuala star won the war with two superbly-taken goals. Hurt as Hennelly won a bouncing ball, then dug in his ribs by O’Donoghue’s elbow. 8

Brian Howard: A quiet enough day on the right flank, but he still scored a fine point and covered plenty of ground. 6

STAR MAN

Paul Mannion: Probably Dublin’s most consistent performer on the day. Arguably broke even with his marker Brendan Harrison in the first half, but still scored two quick-fire points. Added three more in that match-winning scoring spree after the interval, all of them superb efforts from out wide, which deflated Mayo. 8

Dean Rock: Didn’t get much joy out of Chris Barrett, but partially intercepted a kick-out for Mannion’s second point and converted six frees. 6.5

Ciaran Kilkenny: Colm Boyle dominated him in the first half, leading to a shot short from the Castleknock man, but he showed his class, providing the assist for all three goals. 7.5

Substitutes:

Cian O’Sullivan: Came on for Macauley in the 50th minute and slotted into his familiar sweeper role, dispossessing Moran on one occasion. 6

Eoin Murchan: A case of Small replaced by smaller, but the Na Fianna man had little to do. 6

Cormac Costello: Set up Fenton for a goal chance and was black-carded at the end after tangling with Aidan O’Shea. 6

Philly McMahon: Not on long enough to be rated.

Diarmuid Connolly: Not on long enough to be rated.

Paddy Andrews: Not on long enough to be rated.
